MINDFULNESS MONDAY

“Awareness of awareness and Attention to intention”

Last week we discussed the ‘Awareness of awareness’ and began an exercise of taking time to be aware of various things throughout our day. Today I want to expand on the ‘Attention to intention’ aspect of this phrase.

With the notion of attention to intention- we are looking at holding our own intention in the front of our minds. Keep in mind an intention is what we are determining mentally upon, an aim or a plan. So, what we are focused on (i.e. our goal) needs to be what we are paying attention to. A big picture example of this: in a quote from Gandhi “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” where for example, if we want peace among men- we need to live peacefully and not provoke arguments.

A suggestion for this week: Instead of passing moments of awareness throughout your day, try taking 5 minutes once or twice a day to hone your ability with awareness. Find a comfortable seat, with eyes open or closed, and simply pay attention. Focus on your environment and your senses- what are you hearing, smelling, seeing, feeling or tasting? What thoughts keep coming up in your mind? Are you fidgeting or feeling impatient? Spend some quiet time and take mental note of what you notice.

I hope you have a great week and a happy Thanksgiving Day with you loved ones!
