MINDFULNESS MONDAY

This week we are going to explore art as therapy. Getting immersed in the art process allows us to enter a meditative state where relaxation and unconscious expression can thrive.

Releasing emotions and thoughts through a creative force can relieve stress, encourage problem solving and heighten our senses. Be aware that it can also bring up some rough memories, but it is a safe and controlled way manage our life experiences which we might not get to do in other ways.

A suggestion for the week: Therapy in creating art.

· Do something you like. If you find painting appealing you can explore the various colors and applications of paint to your canvas. If you are more of a tactile person, you might enjoy working with clay to express your emotions. Scrapbooking and making collages are another suggestion with less skill involves since you can use universal materials like magazines to make a personal creation.

· Think about colors. What colors make you think about yourself and your life? Which reflect your moods and emotions? You could use a body outline to depict feelings and sensations abstractly.

· Think about shapes and objects. Does a certain image stick in your head? For example do you feel like a part of a broken circle of trust, or perhaps you find the light of a candle inspiring? Use images to express your feelings through your art… they can be abstract or realistic representations- it is up to you.

· Often the symbols in our dreams can reflect our subconscious and can be rich material for our creative impulses.

The point of this activity is to express yourself, not create the next DaVinci or Picasso. Don’t worry about your skill level as that will hold you back. If you feel that you need additional guidance in overcoming life’s struggles or with things that may come up in this activity contact a professional for assistance that best fits your needs.

Have a great week!
