Toxic Emotions Part 1: Understanding Toxic Emotions

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

What are Toxic Emotions?

The term toxic emotions include feelings of anger, guilt, unforgiveness, shame, anxiety, fear, self-loathing, regret, bitterness, resentment, retaliation, hatred, jealousy, helplessness, depression, apathy, loneliness, rejection….

They are feelings that bring no positive benefit to our lives, or our mental well-being.

When left unchecked, toxic emotions can impact our mental and physical health as I will describe in more detail in Part 2.

Toxic emotions can be contagious, just like the common cold. However, happiness and acts of kindness are contagious too.

Your emotions influence the world you interact with, just like the world you surround yourself with influences your emotions. We attract into our lives the emotions that we focus on. If you spend your time with people who focus on joy, gratitude, happiness and other positive emotions then you will find your own thoughts and emotions will also be aligned with positive things, people, experiences, ideas and concepts.

Negative emotions over time lead to disliking yourself and others, they reduce your confidence and self-esteem and negatively impact your life satisfaction by dampening our enthusiasm for life.

Negative emotions can lead to a downward spiral. They stop us from thinking and behaving rationally as well as from seeing situations as they truly are. When this happens, we tend to see and remember only what we want which will prolong our anger, grief, sadness, etc. and prevent us from enjoying our lives.

Join me next time for a deeper look into how toxic and negative emotions affect our overall well-being.
