Toxic Emotions Part 2: 7 ways Toxic Emotions impact our Mental and Physical Health.

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

Simply put toxic emotions can make you sick.

As I noted in part 1, when toxic emotions are left unchecked, they can and will impact our mental and physical health in some very obvious as well as some sneaky ways.

1. Stress can literally cause disease if left unchecked. Scientists have studied the effects of different emotions, attitudes, and thoughts on immune cells and our immune system function and have found that specific toxic emotions can cause specific diseases. These disease-emotion combinations are:

· In PMS and some types of cancer- bitterness is often present.

· With Auto-immune diseases- self-hatred is often associated.

· Cardiovascular, neurological, digestive and psychological problems are often noted with “stress of entrapment” where one feels trapped or stuck with inability to solve a problem.

· In Cancer and slow would healing- feelings of helplessness are often present.

· With an increased risk of heart attack, diabetes and developing a disability- depression is frequently noted as another diagnosis.

· Heart disease (different types)- noted with anxiety, worry and fear.

· Frequently noted in heart attacks and hardening of the arteries- anger is an uncontrolled problem.

2. It is known that stress raises cortisol levels which can lead to excessive weight gait, fatigue, libido-less, constipation and sickness. Increased cortisol release can also block insulin which can lead to a blood sugar problem. Elevated stress over months or years this can result in diabetes.

3. Stress effects the immune system and decreases the immune cell response. As an over-stressed person becomes sick from the lack of immune system response, their anti-inflammatory mechanisms also fail which makes the symptoms of achiness, headache, runny nose and watery eyes worse.

4. Stress can also cause leaky gut syndrome because our thoughts and guts are interconnected. Just think about how, when you are thinking of your favorite food- you begin salivating. By letting toxic emotion take over our thinking, we can actually give ourselves an ulcer, shut down the immune system in our gut and destroy the good bacteria that is needed for good health.

5. Toxic emotions can affect us hormonally as well. Studies show a connection of toxic emotions and miscarriages. The increased cortisol also can lead to increased estrogen levels in fat which, especially for overweight women, can lead to estrogen-dominance which can lead to increased risk of breast cancer and uterine cancer. Lastly toxic emotions have been linked to reduced sperm formation, a decrease or cessation of milk production, and irregular periods.

6. Elevated cortisol can also damage the nerves in the brain and affect our ability to remember. It can lead to learning disability and even memory loss problems similar to Alzheimer’s.

7. Other notable effects:

· Anger leads you to do or say something you will regret later.

· Frustration causes you to consider giving up.

· Fear holds you back by inhibiting action.

· Guilt makes you ashamed about what you have done.

· Bitterness and Resentment cause you to feel sick mentally and physically.

· Sadness can be all consuming.
